Garcia’s hat trick eliminates Lady T-birds: Foster, Silvestri each score one goal during Mohave’s 3-2 play-in loss to Gila Ridge
BULLHEAD CITY — Senior forward Jenise Garcia, who recorded a hat trick scored her third goal during the 47th minute to lead the visiting Lady Hawks over the Lady T-birds 3-2 during the Arizona Interscholastic Association 4A Conference Play-In game at Mohave High School on Thursday night.
Garcia tied it at 1-1 during the 33rd minute off a mad scramble in front of the net, and she tallied her second goal from point-blank range against T-birds keeper Megan Krall, which made it 2-1 Gila Ridge High School during the 46th minute.
“She was a phenomenal player,” said Mohave head coach Kelly Burgess about Garcia. “She had size, speed and she touched the ball very well.
“The problem we had with her is that we didn’t play together.
“Our center-backs were too independent and were working totally independent of one another instead of together, and it showed.
“She got a couple of them that way, and it just didn’t fall our way.”
The Lady T-birds took a 1-0 lead when sophomore forward Skyler Foster’s penalty kick beat Hawks keeper Andrea Fernandez low to the goalie’s left side during the 16h minute.
T-birds freshman forward Charisma Silvestri stole a pass deep inside the Hawks’ defensive zone and beat Fernandez low to the keeper’s right side, just inside the post, which tied it at 2-2 during the 63rd minute.
“She’s a freshman and we’re excited about what she can do,” said Burgess about Silverstri. “Her vision, she sees the field well, she did well.”
The No. 10-seeded Mohave squad ended its season 9-4 overall, 7-3 in conference and 4-2 in the Grand Canyon Region, and the No. 23-seeded Hawks improved to 8-4-1 overall, 6-1-1 in conference and 3-1 in the Southwest Region.
