WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) _ A man opened fire into a car in the parking lot of a psychiatric hospital Thursday, killing his ex-wife and her boyfriend and wounding his daughter, authorities alleged.

Police sought Lloyd Christian, 56, who they accused of firing an undetermined number of shots from a .38-caliber pistol into the car at the Eastern State Hospital at 3:45 p.m., police said.

Authorities obtained warrants charging Christian, of Toano, with two counts of capital murder, said James City County police Capt. Ken Middlebrook. He remained at large Thursday night.

Middlebrook said Christian killed his ex-wife, Maxine Bartlett, of Toano, and Van Overby, 54, of York County, who apparently was Ms. Bartlett’s boyfriend. He said Christian wounded his and Ms. Bartlett’s 12-year-old daughter, Kizzy Christian. Ms. Bartlett’s age was not available.

Middlebrook alleged that Christian fired several rounds into the car, striking both Ms. Bartlett and Overby in the head and chest and Miss Christian in the hand.

The girl was treated for a flesh wound to the right hand and released to relatives, said Dr. James Hess at the Williamsburg Community Hospital.

Jennifer Fidura, deputy commissioner for the state Department of Health and Mental Retardation, said Ms. Bartlett had been dropping Overby off for his housekeeping job at the Eastern State Hospital.

No patients were involved.
