The Allen County coroner’s office Monday identified a 74-year-old man who died in a house fire in Pleasant Township south of Fort Wayne last week.

Daniel L. McLaughlin died from thermal burns and smoke inhalation in a fire in the 10000 block of Muldoon Road near Ferguson Road early Friday.

The coroner’s office said Monday McLaughlin’s death was accidental. Paul Vonbank, chief of the Poe Community Volunteer Fire Department, said last week the cause was under investigation, but appeared to be accidental.

Vonbank could not be reached for comment Monday.

The fire department was called about 12:30 a.m. Friday after a passer-by on the way home from work noticed the blaze, Vonbank said.

The fire was brought under control about 1:30 a.m., he said, and the man’s body was discovered about 7:30 a.m.

One resident was able to get out of the home, Vonbank said. A dog also died in the blaze.

The house, which had a working smoke detector, was destroyed, Vonbank said.
