Grab a drink with Beer Yoga this Friday

Beer and yoga may sound like a strange combination to some, but to others it could make for a great date night.

That’s the thought behind Melinn Williams’s Beer Yoga class scheduled to take place on Friday.

The basic premise is to do yoga poses while holding a drink. Sips can be taken between poses in a social environment meant for both those familiar and new to yoga. Yoga instructor Williams has been operating out of the Be You Yoga studio at 2417 13th St. since 2015. She said the class is a great way to introduce people to yoga.

“Beer Yoga is just a really casual, fun way to come together and do yoga,” Williams said. “Usually when you come to yoga it’s a very individualized practice where you’re really focused and turned inward. But Beer Yoga is more about connecting to the other people on the sides of your mat.”


Beer Yoga goes from 5:30-7:30 p.m on Friday. The price is $5 for first-time visitors and $15 for those currently registered with the studio. Mats are provided, but participants are asked to bring their own beverages.

Williams said people typically bring bottles/cans of beer, but added it’s not too uncommon for someone to bring a bottle of wine or cocktails to share. Those who don’t want to drink alcohol are more than welcome to use bottled water or soda instead.

“It’s just a way to shake things up,” Williams said. “It’s just fun to do something different in Columbus than just going to the bars. It’s a way to meet up with your girlfriends or bring your significant other and still have a cocktail if you want one, but still moves your body in a fun way.”

Kayla Humlicek, of Duncan, has been practicing yoga for the past couple of years. She’s a regular at the studio and has attended Beer Yoga on three occasions.

“As soon as I see it hit the schedule, I always sign up right away,” Humlicek said. “It’s just a good time together with members of the community. This is a lot more of an informal event where we can sit around, laugh and also get in a good workout.”

For those looking to learn more about yoga, Williams will be offering a free yoga class for beginners from 5:30-7 p.m. on Feb. 15. She also plans on rolling out video streaming to her website at www.beyouyogastudio.com so people can pay to follow along with her yoga classes from the comfort of their home.

Williams encourages anyone interested in yoga to give it a try.

“The hardest part is just coming. We build up in our heads all these scenarios and why we can’t do something. We’re just uncomfortable trying something new,” Williams said. “But really the hardest part is trying something new and once you come, you’re going to have a great time. It’s so much fun.”
