Smashed bus window preceded fatal police shooting in Denver

July 3, 2019

DENVER (AP) — Police say a fatal officer-involved shooting during downtown Denver’s morning rush hour happened after the man who was shot smashed the windshield of a public bus.

The Denver Post reports the man, whose name hasn’t been released, was told to get off the bus after causing a disturbance Monday morning, and a passenger reported the incident through the transit department’s app. The man started walking toward downtown and fired at least two shots in the air before pointing his gun at one of the Denver police officers who was following him.

The officer fired three shots, killing the man.

Joe Montoya, Denver police division chief for investigations, says it’s unclear if the man was mentally ill.

The officer who shot the suspect has worked for the department for 18 years.
