Bergen Road remains closed while contractor awaits soil approval from SCDOT
Bergen Road in North Augusta is still closed while a Greeneway tunnel is being built underneath it.
The road closed Feb. 20. The closure was initially expected to last 30 to 45 days.
Rick Meyer, director of North Augusta’s Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department, said they are waiting on compaction tests on soil from South Carolina Department of Transportation to see if it can be used to backfill the hole.
Meyer said North Augusta doesn’t currently have a timeline for when the road will be opened, per the contractor.
The Greeneway tunnel will connect each side of Bergen Road.
“It connects all the homes on the other side of Bergen Road where they have access to the Greeneway without having to cross Bergen Road,” Meyer said in February.
The Greeneway parking lot at the Bergen Road entrance is closed, and the Greenway between Interstate 20 and Broxten Drive is expected to be closed until May 20.
