Markey, Pressley headline Green New Deal tour launch
BOSTON (AP) — U.S. Sen. Ed Markey and Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley are speaking at the launch of a nationwide effort supporting the Green New Deal climate change proposal.
The two Massachusetts Democrats are among the headliners of Thursday evening’s gathering at the Strand Theater in Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood.
The event is organized by the Sunrise Movement, a youth advocacy group that says it’s planning to host more than 100 town halls across the country in support of the legislation, which Markey has introduced in the Senate and Pressley has co-sponsored in the House.
The Green New Deal calls for the U.S. to shift away from fossil fuels such as oil and coal and replace them with renewable sources such as wind and solar power. But Republicans say the plan would devastate the economy.
