World Snowshoe Championships are Saturday in Saranac Lake

February 25, 2017

SARANAC LAKE, N.Y. (AP) — Organizers are as set as they can be for Saturday’s World Snowshoe Championships in Saranac Lake.

Because of the sudden spate of warm weather, the race course has been moved entirely to Dewey Mountain on the western edge of town. Crews moved tons of snow to the venue on Friday in a last-minute effort to make sure there’s enough to cover the course for the races.

The forecast for race day is calling for rain and temperatures in the mid-50s.

More than 350 competitors from the U.S. and abroad, including more than a dozen from India, are registered. Events include a 10-kilometer race and the five-kilometer junior worlds.

The Adirondack Mountain village is the first site in the United States to host the event, which began in 2006.
