Vermont’s Bennington College gets $12m gift from graduate
BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) — Vermont’s Bennington College has received a $12 million gift, most of which will be used to help support the visual arts.
The college announced the gift Wednesday from 1991 graduate Mary Bucksbaum Scanlan, of Woody Creek, Colorado, who is also a Bennington trustee.
The college says that $10 million of the total will be used to establish the Mary Bucksbaum Scanlan ’91 Visual Arts Creativity Fund. The fund will provide support in perpetuity for all aspects of visual arts priorities and programs, including scholarships and faculty positions.
The other $2 million will be used to advance other college priorities.
Bucksbaum Scanlan says the integration of art in a liberal arts education helps make it possible for students to create new work in all fields.
