Local Roundup: Fitchburg Shines on Track

ROXBURY -- Senior Evans Oduro placed third in the boys’ 55-meter hurdles and the girls’ 4x200-meter relay team took fourth to pace an impressive effort for the Fitchburg High School indoor track teams at Saturday’s MSTCA Winter Festival at the Reggie Lewis Center.

Oduro finished the 55 hurdles in 8.08 seconds, and also took sixth in the long jump at 19 feet, 11.5 inches. Juniors Latrell Boddie (10th, long jump, 19-3), Cristian Arduino (34th, 600, 1:36.02) and Williams Avila (44th, 300, 40.30) were also solid for the Fitchburg boys, and senior Jacob Walker placed 52nd in the shot put with a distance of 30-11.25.


Olamide Bamgbose, Wonuola Ashaju, Emerson Scott and Elle Scott made up the fourth-place 4x200 relay team for the Fitchburg girls, finishing in 1:51.30. The athletes also shined individually, as Elle Scott placed fifth in the 300 meters in 43.90; Emerson Scott took fifth in the 55-meter hurdles in 9.59; Ashaju was sixth in the 300 (43.98) and eighth in the long jump (15-5); and Bamgbose placed 16th in the long jump (14-7.5) and 43rd in the 55-meter dash (8.22).

Other top finishers for the Fitchburg girls included Rohanji Novas (34th, shot put, 24-4.75), Erin Donelan (40th, shot put, 22-10.25), Lainey Jaramillo (48th, 55 hurdles, 11.04), Cristina Pureco (52nd, 600, 2:38.55) and Aria DiCato (69th, 55 hurdles, 15.27).

Matt Haskins (7 points, 5 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 steals), Kyle Blaisdell (6 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists) and Alban Baboci (11 points, 5 rebounds) played well for North Middlesex in Friday’s defeat.

Skylar Finnegan (11 points) and Faith Akoachere (7 points, 9 rebounds) were hot out of the gates as Leominster (2-0) opened an early lead in Friday’s contest. Hailey Mondville (9 points, 8 rebounds) and Grace Adams (13 points) headlined a solid third quarter to keep the Blue Devils out in front, while strong defensive play from Destina VivoAmore and Ivana Akoachere sealed the win.

Leominster will next travel to face Westboro on Tuesday.
