Second candidate forum today

The second of four candidate forums sponsored by the Appeal-Democrat and Yuba-Sutter Chamber of Commerce is today starting at 6 p.m. at the Yuba County Government Center.

Taking questions will be Yuba County District 5 supervisor candidates Randy Fletcher (incumbent), Alton Wright and John Mistler at

6 p.m.; and Yuba County sheriff candidates Wendell Anderson and Teng Saechao at 7 p.m.

The forum is moderated by former radio newsman Bob Harlan and Appeal-Democrat Editor Steve Miller.

Moderators will pose questions, and attendees are encouraged to write out their questions and send them up. Citizens who want to pose questions are also welcome to email them to ADnewsroom@appealdemocrat.com or by messaging via the Appeal-Democrat Facebook page. Yuba County Superior Court is searching for 2018-2019 grand jury

The Yuba County Superior Court is searching for 19 local residents to serve on the 2018-2019 grand jury, which investigates different issues suggested by community members and evaluates local agencies to ensure they are operating by the book.

In order to qualify, a potential juror must be a Yuba County resident for at least one year, a U.S. citizen and at least 18 years old. Other requirements include “sound judgment” and sufficient knowledge of the English language. Applications must be submitted by May 1.

“As grand jurors you will receive state training, attend tours, briefings and visit local government agencies,” said Robyn Hauck, with the Yuba County Superior Court, in a press release. “You will gain knowledge regarding the workings of Yuba County public agencies to help assess areas in need of improvement and compliance with laws.”

Those selected to be on the grand jury will officially start their one-year term when they take an oath of office on June 28. Participants will receive a small stipend and mileage reimbursement, according to a press release.

Responsibilities of a grand juror will include:

• Assessing the performance of local agencies and ensuring that it is proper and ethical.

• Providing recorded reports to government agencies for review.

• Consideration of citizen’s complaints, inquiries and compliments of local government agencies.

• Verification that tax dollars are wisely spent.

• Evaluating conditions at county jails and facilities.
