Prize-winning Mississippi Delta journalist Nicholas dies

July 9, 2019

CLEVELAND, Miss. (AP) — A longtime Mississippi newspaper editor who won a national award for editorials about press freedom has died.

An obituary says Wayne Nicholas was 78 when he died Sunday at his home in Sunflower County.

Nicholas won dozens of awards at the Bolivar Commercial from 1986 to 2005. The newspaper published five days a week when he was there. It now publishes twice a week.

In 1991, he received the Brechner Freedom of Information Award from the University of Florida — a citation that usually goes to writers from large publications. His award was for a collection of editorials about press freedom.

Nicholas won the 2002 J. Oliver Emmerich Award for Editorial Excellence, given by the Mississippi Press Association.

Services are Thursday at Ray Funeral Home in Cleveland.
