Plane Crash-Lands In Nakhichevan, Seven Reported Killed
BAKU, Azerbaijan (AP) _ A plane carrying 74 people crashed Tuesday after taking off from Nakhichevan, killing at least seven, officials said.
Initial reports said the other people on board the Tu-134 were injured and hospitalized, according to Chinghiz Aliev, deputy head of the national Azerbaijan Airlines.
Aliev said one of the plane’s engines failed soon after it took off from the main airport at Nakhichevan, capital of the Azerbaijani enclave in Armenia. The plane had been en route to Baku, Azerbaijan’s capital.
The aircraft went down about a mile from the runway, Aliev said on national television.
Last Thursday, a Boeing 707 cargo jet crashed while trying to land in Baku. The crash, which Azerbaijani officials blamed on a malfunction in the landing gear, killed two people and injured four. The plane had been returning from China carrying textiles.
