Rockin the Arena concert returns to Ellensburg Rodeo

April 8, 2017

The “Rockin’ the Arena” concert will be returning to Ellensburg Rodeo weekend this year.

The event will take place on Thursday, Aug. 31, and is the first time the concert has happened in close to 20 years, said Jeff Leichleiter, Ellensburg Rodeo director. Ned LeDoux will be the featured act for the event and local singer Zach Hinson will open.

“LeDoux is an up-and-coming star, and his dad was the last one to play in the arena,” Leichleiter said. “It is more about getting people in the community back involved in the fair and rodeo grounds and everyone having a good time.”

A drummer in his dad Chris LeDoux’s band Western Underground since 1998, Ned LeDoux continued to tour with the band after his father died in 2005. For the last year, he has been steadily touring and opening for acts like Toby Keith, Chris Janson, Aaron Watson and Randy Houser.

Hinson grew up in Yakima and spent the majority of 2016 touring with Nashville artists such as Keith Anderson, James Otto and Trick Pony, in addition his own shows and festivals throughout the Northwest. His new album will be released this fall.

The rodeo board hopes to continue the concert every year, Leichleiter said. The board will need to get at least 2,500 tickets this year to cover its costs, but predicts to get a total of 3,500 to 4,000 tickets sold.

“From years past there was some history of the cost of doing it versus the revenue generated, but this year we’re very confident that we should be able to fund it fully,” Leichleiter said. “We’ve geared up our digital marketing and partnered with MyEllensburg.com and the chamber so we’ve really reset with our community partners to really make it a big deal.”

Tickets are being sold for $28 each. Gold Buckle members will get tickets with their membership.

“Very, very affordable for the venue and the entertainers. And we did that intentionally so we could get the attention of a lot of people,” Leichleiter said.
