Watertown tennis team 2nd at Appleton West invitational

September 11, 2018 GMT

APPLETON — Watertown’s girls tennis team finished second at the Appleton West Invitational on Saturday.

“All in all, this was a solid day for the team,” Watertown girls tennis coach Andy Dobbins said. “A second place finish is a great result against this competition. I thought that we came ready to compete and generally looked sharp in the first matches, which is always important. We come to these tournaments to play a lot of tennis and gain experience in tough situations. We faced some adversity and were challenged at each spot. This was great preparation for a tough week ahead and I know that this experience will help us.”

Alayna Clark went 3-0 at No. 3 singles.

“Alayna really came to play and was dominant in her first two matches,” Dobbins said. “She needed to dig deep in the championship match, and I’m really proud of the way she stayed steady in that tiebreak. She is playing with confidence and is playing smart tennis. When she keeps the ball deep and stays patient, she is tough to beat.”

Jenna Koepp and Katie Schleicher also finished 3-0. Finishing 2-1 for the Goslings were Mya Werning at No. 4 singles, Sydney Linskens and Abby Marr at No. 2 doubles and Hannah Baneck and Grace Bowman at No. 3 doubles.

“I thought all of our doubles teams looked sharp today,” Dobbins said.

“Jenna and Katie rolled through the first two matches, but they were really pushed in the final. Hartford is a solid team, and very tough at the net. But we had great court positioning and quick hands at the net. Jenna and Katie can play a variety of different styles and are great at adapting their game on the fly. They are playing with confidence and really working together.”

Watertown hosts Stoughton in a rescheduled dual meet today.
