5 things to do this weekend (5/11-5/13)

May 12, 2018 GMT

1. Mine, mine, mine

Rochester’s annual Gold Rush event is a treasure-hunter’s dream. Described by its organizers as one of the top antique destinations in the U.S., the flea-market event, in its 46th year, fills tents and buildings across Graham Park, the Olmsted County Fairgrounds. Free admission, $5 parking. Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Mark your calendar, too, for the fall Gold Rush, Aug. 17-18.

2. Bottomless bucket

Sunday is for Mom; Saturday is for Pop — that is, free refills of popcorn at Rochester’s CineMagic Hollywood 12. Get a magic bucket and you can have it filled as many times as you want, free of charge. Might make a rainy Saturday a little sunnier.

3. Get your wings

Is your kid mesmerized by airplanes? On Saturday morning, members of the Experimental Aircraft Association’s Rochester chapter are offering free, 20-minute rides to kids ages 8-17. Come out to the Rochester International Airport between 8:30 and 11:30 a.m. It’s first-come, first-served. More info here: www.facebook.com/events/173473773309185.

4. Brush with fame

What’s better than seeing an art display? Seeing art being made. And since we love a competition, this is even better still. See local artists square off in a Paint Off, 5 p.m. Saturday at Gallery 24, 324 First Ave. SW. Six artists will create works of art on a 3-foot by 4-foot canvas on a given theme in two hours. Info: 507-319-4038.

5. Music for moms

SEMYO — Southeastern Minnesota Youth Orchestras — puts on its annual Mother’s Day concert at 2 p.m. Sunday at Century High School. This year’s concert features the world premiere of student composer Lucas Sanner’s work, “Thunderstorm.” $12 adults, $10 seniors, $5 students, $35 family. Info: 507-696-2023.
