May the furs be with you during the second annual Zoo’s Rezcue Paw Wars 5K Fun Run on May 4 in Friendswood.

The event, scheduled from 4-8 p.m. on a day recognized as “Star Wars Day” around the world by fans of the George Lucas film, will occur at Stevenson Park, 1100 S Friendswood Drive, to benefit efforts to rescue neglected or homeless pets. (In case you didn’t know, the holiday may stem from a 1979 British newspaper ad that proclaimed, “May the Fourth Be With You” to congratulate Margaret Thatcher on her May 4 victory to become prime minister).

Bring your dog to go with you on a 1K or 5K course. If you don’t have a pup, you can do the course solo.

“There will also be dogs available to ‘rent’ for a donation to the dog rescue groups that will be there so you can have a furry companion to join you on your run if you so desire,” said Kristin Martin, manager of Friendswood Family Animal Hospital, which is partnering to host the event with Zoo’s Rezcue, a nonprofit organization that focuses on bringing help to homeless, abused and neglected pets in Friendswood.

“All proceeds from the race registrations will go directly to the rescue and portions of the other events and vendor fees,” Martin said.

The registration fee for the 1K is $25 and $35 for the 5K race.

The 1K will begin at 5 p.m. and the 5K at 5:45 p.m.

In addition to the races, the day will include a disc jockey, a raffle and vendors selling items related to pets.

“There will also be a photographer present to capture the event as well as offer photo memory packages with your pets,” Martin said.

Last year’s inaugural Paw Wars event drew about 75 runners and raised approximately $2,000, she said.
