Two Held on Bail As Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Bust
FITCHBURG -- An Erving man and a Turners Falls woman were arrested in near Route 31 in Fitchburg on heroin trafficking charges after a traffic stop Sunday, according to a statement released by state police.
State Police patrolling the area of Route 31 pulled over a 2007 Volkswagen Jetta near the intersection of Eaton Street for “motor vehicle infractions” including speeding at about 10:20 p.m.
During an investigation state troopers allegedly found 48 grams of heroin, 8 grams of cocaine, two pills and “a bag with green vegetable matter” in the car, according to the statement.
The driver of the car, Robert J. Ortiz, 28, was found with a loaded .40 caliber Smith & Wesson handgun. Ortiz had a license to carry the weapon but broke the law by carrying the firearm while committing felony narcotics trafficking, according to the statement.
Ortiz and his passenger, Kishania I. Vega-Martinez, 28, were arrested and brought to state police barracks in Leominster.
Ortiz was charged with heroin trafficking, possession of a class B drug to distribute, conspiracy to violate drug law, possession of a firearm in felony and speeding, according to the statement. He was held on $20,000 bail.
Vega-Martinez was charged with heroin trafficking, possession of a class B drug to distribute, possession of a class E drug, and conspiracy to violate drug law, according to the statement. She was held on $50,000 bail.
Both suspects are scheduled to be arraigned in District Court Tuesday morning.
