Retired head of schools for diocese dies at age 67

A longtime Catholic educator who most recently served as superintendent for the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend has died.

Marsha A. Jordan was 67. Her obituary indicated she had cancer.

Jordan died Thursday, about a month after Gov. Eric Holcomb awarded her the Sagamore of the Wabash, the highest distinction of honor bestowed by the governor.

It was given in recognition of her four decades of “unfailing commitment to Catholic education” in the diocese, according to a news release about the award.

Jordan recently retired as superintendent, a role she had since 2014, the release said.

Amy Johns, associate superintendent of schools for the diocese, described Jordan as a remarkable educator.

“Her dedication and deep Catholic faith in her ministry to our schools has been a blessing, and she will be sorely missed,” Johns said by email Monday. “Her legacy will live on in all those she has touched through her leadership both in and outside of the classroom.”

An Indiana University graduate, Jordan’s career included teaching positions at Wawasee Preparatory School, St. Vincent de Paul School and Bishop Dwenger High School. She became principal of Queen of Angels School in 2000 and joined the Catholic Schools Office as assistant superintendent in 2010, the release said.

“As a 22-year-old new teacher in 1973, I turned down a position in a public school system, opting instead for a parochial school. I am not sure that at the time I knew this to be my ‘vocation,’ but God did,” Jordan wrote in Today’s Catholic in January.

“I am certain that God chooses us for this vocation and that the Holy Spirit draws out the gifts we have so that we can fulfill His plan for us,” she added.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Divine Mercy Funeral Home, 3500 Lake Ave., with a rosary and prayer service at 4 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Vincent de Paul Church, 1502 E. Wallen Road.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Queen of Angels School Scholarship Fund or Visiting Nurse.
