Stratford: Voccola wins recount for zoning panel
STRATFORD — A recount staged Monday morning in Town Hall discovered that Republican Alec Voccola defeated Democrat Barbara Hemlich for a seat on the Zoning Commission by three votes.
The final tally was Voccola, 922 and Heimlich, 919.
This is an about-face of what the result was on election night, when Heimlich snared a 919-918 win. Voccola will represent Planning District III which is the same as Town Council districts 5 and 6.
This was the only recount that precipitated from the Nov. 7 election in Stratford. It also puts the five-member Zoning Commission in Republican hands.
Voccola’s term will begin on Jan. 1. He will join Democrats Joe Paul and Stephanie Philips, and Republicans Rich Fredette, Christopher E. Silhavey and Mike Henrick.
Paul and Philips were not up for re-election; their terms will end in January 2020. Philips, the chairwoman of the panel, was a Democratic mayoral candidate, too; she lost to Republican Laura Hoydick 5,738 to 5,126.
