Ex-Bruins GM Fired by Oilers
The Edmonton Oilers have fired president of hockey operations and general manager Peter Chiarelli, the former GM of the Bruins, amid another season that has failed to live up to expectations.
The team announced Chiarelli’s abrupt dismissal Wednesday in the aftermath of its third consecutive loss. Edmonton has lost 12 of its past 16 games going into the All-Star Break. The Oilers are 14-14-2 since firing coach Todd McLellan and replacing him with Ken Hitchcock.
President and CEO Bob Nicholson said Keith Gretzky will assume more responsibilities as the Oilers look for a full-time GM.
Flores meets with Dolphins
Patriots defensive play-caller Brian Flores is taking a break from his Super Bowl preparations to meet with the Miami Dolphins, who are expected to hire him as head coach after the title game.
The meeting Wednesday was Flores’ second with the Dolphins. He was the first candidate interviewed for the job by owner Stephen Ross and general manager Chris Grier on Jan. 4, and they targeted him a week later as their choice to succeed Adam Gase. No agreement can become final until after the Super Bowl on Feb. 3.
Star receiver Larry Fitzgerald is returning to the Arizona Cardinals for a 16th NFL season. The Cardinals announced Wednesday that they signed the 35-year-old Fitzgerald to a one-year contract.
Pomeranz joins Giants
Left-hander Drew Pomeranz has agreed to a $1.5 million, one-year contract with the San Francisco Giants, a deal that includes $3.5 million in possible roster and performance bonuses.
Pomeranz pitched the past three years with Boston. He won a career-high 17 games for the Red Sox in 2017. But he went 2-6 with a 6.08 ERA last season and was limited to 11 starts and 26 appearances for the World Series champions.
Ichiro Suzuki has agreed to a minor league deal with the Seattle Mariners, paving the way for the 45-year-old to play in the Mariners’ season-opening series in Japan.
Miller to be honored
Johnny Miller’s final broadcast as NBC’s golf analyst will be during the third round of the Phoenix Open. The network said it will honor Miller during the Feb. 2 broadcast since the final round on Feb. 3 is about crowning a champion. Miller, who announced his retirement in September, has been NBC’s lead analyst since 1990 and has worked with announcer Dan Hicks since 2000.
The Memphis Grizzlies may be ready to start rebuilding, listening to trade offers for the NBA’s longest-tenured teammates. Guard Mike Conley said Grizzlies owner Robert Pera had told both he and center Marc Gasol that they will be mentioned in potential trade talks. ... The Indiana Pacers lost All-Star guard Victor Oladipo to a serious right knee injury in the second quarter of Wednesday night’s game against Toronto.
Oladipo’s leg bent awkwardly as he fell to the floor while trying to disrupt an outlet pass to the Raptors’ Pascal Siakam.
The team announced that Oladipo will undergo an MRI on Thursday.
The magnitude of the injury was obvious quickly.
Trainers placed a towel over the leg, and players from both teams surrounded Oladipo. Fans gave him a standing ovation as he was carted off the floor on a stretcher and reporters were detoured from their normal path to the media work room while Oladipo apparently was being evaluated in the hallway.
