Lowell Can’t Stage a Rally
NORWICH, Conn. -- The Lowell Spinners fell behind big early and never recovered on Saturday night at Dodd Stadium in a 10-3 loss to the Connecticut Tigers.

The host Tigers led 3-0 after the first inning and 7-0 after the second. Lowell dropped to 0-2 as these teams opened up their New York-Penn League season on Friday night.
Lowell got runs on an RBI double by right fielder Tyler Esplin in the fifth and an RBI triple by first baseman Garrett Benge in the sixth. Alberto Schmidt also scored in the sixth on a wild pitch. Both Esplin and Benge went 2-for-4 at the plate.
Spinners’ starter Juan Lopez was touched-up for seven runs in 2.2 innings of work, but Rio Gomez tossed 3.1 innings of scoreless relief.
The teams will complete their three-game series on Sunday (4:05 p.m.). The Spinners will host Staten Island for their 2018 home opener on Monday (6:35 p.m.).
