Man charged with selling sawed-off shotgun sentenced
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts man indoctrinated into the gang lifestyle by his own parents has been sentenced to federal prison for selling a sawed-off shotgun.
Masslive.com reports that Juan Javis Maisonet, of Holyoke, was sentenced Wednesday to nearly three years in prison after pleading guilty in April to selling a loaded, sawed-off shotgun to a government informant in 2015.
Maisonet’s lawyer, David Rountree, says his client had a dysfunctional and often violent childhood and his parents and grandmother indoctrinated him into the Latin Kings at a young age.
This led to Maisonet bouncing around juvenile justice and state court systems and eventually falling into drug abuse.
U.S. District Judge Mark G. Mastroianni says he took Maisonet’s difficult childhood and drug abuse struggles into account when crafting the sentence.
