Prep basketball: HHS girls roll past Riverside 80-20

HUNTINGTON - The Huntington girls basketball team defeated Riverside 80-20 Wednesday at the Highlanders’ Lonnie Lucas-William Archer Gym Complex for its second consecutive win and fifth on the season in a matchup of two Class AAA schools.

Alezha Turner led all scorers with 22 for the Highlanders with Katie Swann and Latahia Jackson each scoring 13 points to lead Huntington (5-2). Riverside was led by Allison Bostic with six and Kendall Merrell with nine.

Huntington will have an eight-day break for Christmas and will resume play Dec. 27 vs Prestonsburg in a tournament at Raceland. Riverside (1-5) will next travel to Charleston Catholic for a game on Friday.

CABELL MIDLAND 64, CAPITAL 20: Autumn Lewis scored 24 points to lead all scorers and Gracie Hightower pulled down 11 rebounds to lead Cabell Midland to a home girls basketball victory over the Capital Cougars Wednesday at the Castle in Ona.

With the win, Cabell Midland improved its record to 4-1, while Capital dropped to 1-4. The Knights will travel to South Carolina Dec. 27-29 where they will play in the USBA Carolina Invitational in Charleston and Summerville.

WOODROW WILSON 65, SPRING VALLEY 62: The Flying Eagles (3-1) outscored the Timberwolves 23-4 in the second quarter for a 14-point halftime lead, then held on. Victoria Staunton scored a game-high 20 for Woodrow Wilson. Elizabeth Cadle scored 17 and Laken Ball 12. Breanna Saunders and Haley McComas each scored 16 for Spring Valley (1-4). Caroline Asbury chipped in with 15.

SPRING VALLEY 18 4 25 15 - 62: Saunders 16, McComas 16, Meredith 7, Edwards 9, Asbury 15.

WOODROW WILSON 13 23 15 16 - 65: Cadle 17, Frantz 9, Ball 12, Staunton 20, Perry 1, Walton 6.

SOUTH GALLIA 54, OVC 23: Kiley Stapleton scored 18 and McKayla Waugh 12 in the Rebels’ victory over Ohio Valley Christian in Mercerville, Ohio. Emily Childers led the Defenders with seven points and 11 rebounds.

RACELAND 38, GREENUP COUNTY 35: Cameryn Davidson and Kierston Smith scored nine each as the Rams (4-4) edged the Musketeers (2-6), who were led by Maggie Miller’s 15 points.

Tuesday games, boys

CHESAPEAKE 55, SOUTHEASTERN 37: Levi Blankenship scored 18 to lead Chesapeake (5-2), which limited Southeastern (1-6) to 13 points in the second half.

SYMMES VALLEY 89, SCIOTOVILLE EAST 61: Jack Leith scored 31, grabbed 20 rebounds and blocked five shots as the Vikings (2-5 overall, 2-2 Southern Ohio Conference) defeated the Tartans. Leith’s brother, Luke Leith, scored 16 and snagged 13 rebounds. Drew Scherer scored 19.

IRONTON ST. JOE 55, ROCK HILL 53: Jimmy Mahlmeister made a layup at the buzzer in overtime to give the Flyers (5-1) the win over the Redmen (3-3) in Ironton.

After a charge gave Ironton St. Joe the ball with 3 seconds left, Isaac Whaley inbounded the ball with a long pass to Ryan Payne, who hit Mahlmeister breaking to the basket.

Zach Roach led the Flyers with 23 points. Ryan Payne scored 17. Logan Hankins led Rock Hill with 20 points. Kadin France snatched 11 rebounds.

ALEXANDER 59, RIVER VALLEY 35: J.K. Kearns scored 16 to lead the Spartans (6-0) by the Raiders (1-5) in Albany, Ohio. Brandon Call paced River Valley with 15 points.

VINTON COUNTY 74, MEIGS 66: Eli Griffith and Ricky Body scored 20 each as the Vikings (2-2) beat the Marauders (3-4) in McArthur, Ohio. Weston Baer scored 29 and Zach Bartrum 18 for Meigs.
