Man gets 10 years for fatally shooting teen during theft

December 13, 2018

ROANOKE, Va. (AP) — A Virginia man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for fatally shooting an 18-year-old man prosecutors say may have been stealing from his car.

The Roanoke Times reports 21-year-old Denke Tequan Gaither was sentenced Wednesday and pleaded no contest to charges including second-degree murder for the 2017 shooting of 18-year-old Atlante’ McArthur Dent. Prosecutors say a witness told authorities that shots were fired that November night when Dent opened the door to a car.

Prosecutors say that led police to Gaither, who told authorities he’d seen strangers in his car and fired gunshots their direction, but wasn’t sure if he’d hit anyone. Officials have said Dent was shot in the hip and chest. Prosecutors say police found $15 on Dent that had reportedly been in Gaither’s car.
