Riverbend Live announces its summer entertainment lineup
WINSTON — Riverbend Live! in Winston will feature a variety of musical guests and programs for its five-week concert series this summer at Riverbend Park.
This year’s free series will have blues, big brass, R & B, soul, Cuban/samba, youth theater, cowboy poetry and humor.
This is the 21st year of Riverbend Live! The concert series opens July 7 with Dirty Bourbon River, which features New Orleans big brass, circus rock music.
On July 14, Ural Thomas and the Pain, which backed big names like James Brown, Otis Redding, Little Stevie Wonder, The Kingsmen and Paul Revere and the Raiders, will bring their soul music to the stage.
July 21 and 22 will feature the youth theater, featuring local young talent, with Once Upon a Time: A Disney Musical Review with local youth performing on Friday and Saturday night.
Ricardo Lemvo and his Makina Loca Band will perform on July 28 with a combination of Cuban and samba rhythms.
On Aug. 4, the popular Cowboy Poet Waddie Mitchell and Western Music Cowboy Celtic with David Wilkie will be on stage.
Wilkie describes Cowboy Celtic as “more than music, it’s theatre, imagery, history, storytelling and more all wrapped up in sagebrush and tartan.”
Riverbend organizers say they try to get a good variety to appeal to a lot of people.
“We always like to have a mix of regional and national acts, featuring jazz, big band and soul,” said Jeremy Mitchell, who is on the Riverbend Live! committee. “We like to bring in music that makes people move.”
Mitchell said this summer’s concert lineup provides a variety of artists from as far away as Angola to Alberta, and it’s a zero cost for people.
“That’s an unbeatable value,” Mitchell said. “And the youth theater production and cowboy poetry and comedy have become regular staples.”
The concerts begin at 7 p.m. and last about two hours.
Attendees can bring lawn chairs or blankets, but no pets are allowed. It is a no smoking event.
There will be a variety of food booths, or visitors can bring their own picnic basket.
