SOFTBALL: Romanchick, Tuzinski Throw Double No-hitter In Wyoming Seminary Win

May 10, 2019 GMT

KINGSTON — It was well played, it was exciting, it had championship implications.

And it ended with a result so rare you had to see it to believe it.

A baseball or softball fan could go an entire lifetime without seeing what happened Thursday at Wyoming Seminary, where Sem’s Delaney Romanchick and Hanover Area’s Sarah Tuzinski each threw no-hitters, recording 39 combined outs with seven walks, zero hits and one run.

That run was scored in the first inning by Sem’s speedy senior Aubrey Mytych, who drew a walk and then advanced around the bases until scoring in the Blue Knights’ 1-0 win in Wyoming Valley Conference softball.

“Never saw anything like that,” Hanover Area head coach Kathy Healey said of the double no-hitter. “Both pitchers played great, both teams played great.”

The loss puts Healey’s Hawkeyes (14-4, 11-2 WVC) in second place for the WVC Division 3 title behind Sem (16-3, 12-1 WVC), which could clinch the championship Monday against GAR. Sem beat GAR, 11-1, the first time around.

Romanchick, a junior who’s verbally committed to Drexel, improved to 15-3 and lowered her ERA to 1.95.

She said facing a pitcher like Tuzinski (9-2, 1.14 ERA) forces one another to up their game.

“You know from the beginning we’re not going to be scoring a ton of runs off a pitcher like her,” Romanchick said. “She’s really stepped up her game this year. She’s a really great pitcher and it makes me want to compete against her and get the win.”

Romanchick started Thursday with a 1-2-3 first inning, setting down the Hawkeyes’ Sara Whitesell, Alessia Mangan and Tuzinski, a trio that entered with a cumulative .379 batting average.

Tuzinski, a junior, countered with back-to-back strikeouts of Providence recruit Tiana Wren and standout freshman Akira Kopec before walking Mytych.

Then, according to Aubrey’s older brother and Sem head coach Steve Mytych, it was Aubrey Mytych’s experience and softball IQ — rather than her speed — that helped her navigate her way to home plate.

“She’s played since T-ball ... and my dad coached her to a state championship when she was at Wyoming Area 10-and-under, and they won that same way, making the team throw the ball around,” Steve Mytych said.

A member of Sem’s state champion field hockey team who will play field hockey at Penn State, Aubrey Mytych stole second base.

On the next pitch, Mytych intentionally drifted between second and third base to force an errant throw from the catcher that went into left field, helping her round third and come home to score.

The next few innings passed without any hits for either side, something Romanchick said she was aware of — but she also tried her hardest to focus on the batters rather than the potential no-hitter.

Romanchick pitched a perfect game last season against MMI Prep, but she said this was her first no-hitter.

Hanover Area threatened by putting runners at first and second in the sixth and seventh innings, but some solid plays by Sem’s infield — catcher Campbell Kelly, pitcher Romanchick, first baseman Halle Kehl, second baseman Kopec, shortstop Wren, third baseman Alexus Dunn — prevented any runs or hits from happening.

The game ended with Kehl fielding a weak, but tricky, ground ball in the shallow infield along the first-base line. She flipped to Kopec, who was covering first, for the out.

“This was one of the best games I’ve ever seen,” said Steve Mytych, who took over as Sem head coach in 2015 when it finished last-place in Division 3. “I know playing against Morgan Bienkowski at Redeemer, she was really good. But I don’t believe she ever threw a no-hitter against us. For both pitchers to throw no-hitters, it’s really once in a lifetime. That doesn’t happen.”

The most recent double no-hitter in MLB reportedly happened May 2, 1917 when Fred Toney and the Cincinnati Reds beat Hippo Vaughn and the Chicago Cubs, 1-0.
