Many Government Offices Closed Today For National Day Of Mourning
In observance of a national day of mourning for former President George H.W. Bush on Wednesday, many government offices will be closed and some services suspended.
• The U.S. Postal Service will suspend regular mail delivery, but limited package delivery service will continue in the run up to the Christmas holiday.
• Stock and bond trading on the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq will be suspended. Commodities trading will be open.
• Most federal employees will be excused from work on Wednesday, according to the federal Office of Personnel Management. The agency did not specify which employees must stay on the job, leaving that up to individual agencies. Some federal employees, however, may be required to report for work if their agencies decide they are needed for “national security, defense, or other public need,” according to the order.
• The U.S. courthouses in Scranton and Wilkes-Barre will be closed and all cases on that day will be postponed.
