After grinding out penalty-kick win, Nebraska soccer team finds Gophers in its way

November 2, 2018 GMT

Nebraska and Minnesota will truly be starting with a clean slate Friday.

The Gophers are one of only two Big Ten teams the Huskers didn’t face during the regular season, but Minnesota is in NU’s way now at the conference soccer tournament. The teams play a semifinal at 12:30 p.m. Friday in Westfield, Indiana. BTN will televise the match.

The sixth-seeded Huskers are coming off a win in a penalty-kick shootout after a scoreless draw Sunday in the Big Ten quarterfinals at Ohio State. Minnesota scored in the 88th minute to upend second-seeded Rutgers 1-0 in its quarterfinal.

Against Minnesota, the Huskers would take a repeat of their defensive performance against Ohio State. Husker goalkeeper Aubrei Corder made six saves in regulation for her fifth shutout of the season, then stopped three of the Buckeyes’ five attempts in the shootout.

But offensively, Nebraska has been challenged lately, scoring more than one goal in a match only once since a 4-3 win over Indiana on Sept. 20.

In Friday’s first semifinal, top-seeded Penn State faces No. 5 seed Illinois at 10 a.m. The semifinal winners play at 10 a.m. Sunday.

The Huskers won their only Big Ten Tournament crown in 2013 after winning the Big 12 tourney five times.
