FEATURED SPEAKER: Dr. Kelli Johnson is the speaker for the Marshall University Lifelong Learning Program on Tuesday, Feb. 12, from 10:30 a.m. until noon at Woodlands Retirement Community, One Bradley Foster Drive, Huntington. The topic is “African Americans in West Virginia: The Fairfield Oral History Project.” This group meets the second Tuesday of each month.

SWIMMER OF THE YEAR: Kudos to Cabell Midland High School sophomore Brooke Blom, who was selected by league coaches as the Mountain State Athletic Conference swimmer of the year. She has been swimming since she was 4 and currently swims for the West Virginia Wild Swim Club in Hurricane. Brooke plans to swim in college, possibly at the University of Pennsylvania. Her parents are Paul and Dina Blom.

FIRST-TIME PARENTS: Congratulations to first-time parents Zach and Ashli Miller, of Huntington, whose daughter, Skylynn Rayne, was born Thursday, Jan. 31. Maternal grandparents are Raymond and Rachael Kelley, of Branchland, and paternal grandparents are Bill and Teresa Miller, of Ona. Ed Miller, of Barboursville, is the paternal great-grandfather.

PLEDGE: Will Day, a member of Boy Scout Troop 733, attended the Barboursville City Council meeting Tuesday, Feb. 5, and led the pledge of allegiance. He is working toward his citizenship and community scout badge. Will is a ninth-grade student at St. Joseph High School in Huntington and is the son of James and Jean Day, of Barboursville.

MEETING: The Westmoreland Woman’s Club meets on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2019, at 6:30 p.m. at the Westmoreland Woman’s Club building, 2962 Bradley Road, Huntington. The devotion will be led by Jennifer Parsley and the pledge to the flag by Sandee Thacker. The hostess committee is Nancy Fisher, Jennifer Parsley and Courtney Parsley. Guest speakers will be representatives of SERVPRO, who will discuss their services.

MATH FIELD DAY WINNERS: On Friday, Jan. 30, Cabell County Schools announced the team winners of the 2019 Math Field Day. Listed are the first-place high school and middle school team winners: 10th12th grades, Cabell Midland High School - Yousef Abdelgaber, Ramsey Ash, Emilie Charles, Zach Force, Zach Hutchinson, Jack McKinney, Kelsey Mills, Matthew Thomas, Colin Tipton and Andrew Watson; ninth grade, Huntington High School Team 1 - Jace Duckworth, Ajay Neginhal, Henry Sheils; eighth grade, Barboursville Middle School - Jackson Stewart, Blake Fry, Arianna Lambert; seventh grade, Barboursville Middle School - Patti Robertson, Luke Huh, Landon Kent; sixth grade, Barboursville Middle School - Soo Young Oh, Marcus Blanks, Candace Huh. Today these students represent Cabell County at the 2019 Regional Math Field Day competition at the Logan Campus of the Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College.

SINGING VALENTINES: The ThunderTones, a mixed-gender chorus that sings a cappella music in the barbershop style, offers a singing valentine for $50 that will be delivered on Wednesday and Thursday Feb. 13-14. PUBLIC EDUCATION MEETING: A Cabell County family public education meeting will be held Monday, Feb. 11, at 5 p.m. at the Memorial Student Center (Room 2W22) at Marshall University to discuss questions about the omnibus education bill SB 451. All parents, students and interested community members are welcome.
