Warriors appear at No. 25 in final NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball poll
MOUNT CARMEL, Ill. -- Wabash Valley College head men’s basketball coach Mike Carpenter knew there was a lot at stake going into this past week. His Warriors needed to win for positioning in conference, but a win would also likely get the Warriors ranked -- and it did.
In the final poll of the 2018-19 season, the Warriors (21-6) appeared at No. 25 in the NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball poll, their first national ranking of the season. WVC capped this past week with an 85-56 victory at Kankakee on Feb. 18, followed by an 88-83 victory at previously No. 22 ranked Olney Central on Feb. 20. The Warriors were slated to play on Saturday, Feb. 23 as well, but that has since been rescheduled.
WVC has overcame some tremendous adversity following sophomore Marcus Garrett’s season-ending injury in the first game of the season, but have weathered the storm well. The Warriors head into the final week of the season on a tear, having won 16 of their last 18 games, including a nine-game winning streak.
Olney Central fell out of the poll with their loss to WVC, but were narrowly excluded, earning just three less points in the poll than the Warriors.
Notably, Great Rivers Athletic Conference foe John A. Logan (25-3) checks in at No. 5 in the poll, along with Vincennes (27-1) at No. 2 in the poll and earning one first place vote. Florida Southwestern State (28-1) checked in at No. 1 once again in the final poll of the season.
Tonight kicks off what’s likely be a grueling week for the Warriors. They’ll host Kaskaskia at 7:30 p.m., then host No. 2 Vincennes on Friday (March 1) at 7:30 p.m., followed by traveling for the rescheduled Lincoln Trail game on Saturday (March 2) at 3 p.m. which will conclude their regular season.
The Region XXIV Tournament is just over a week away, beginning on March 6 and kicking off the Warriors postseason hopes.
