Prep football: Lodi moves into No. 1 spot in Associated Press medium-school state rankings

The Lodi football team created even more buzz heading into Friday’s Capitol North Conference showdown at Lake Mills, earning the No. 1 ranking among medium-sized schools in this week’s Associated Press state poll.

The Blue Devils (4-0) received seven of a possible 11 No. 1 votes and 103 of a possible 110 points to claim the No. 1 spot, after former poll leader Waukesha Catholic Memorial lost to Muskego last week.

Lodi begins its Capitol North season with a 7 p.m. game against Lake Mills (4-0), which remained in the No. 6 spot in the medium-school rankings (for programs with enrollments of 301 to 900).

Mount Horeb/Barneveld (3-1) was ranked ninth and Clinton (4-0) earned honorable mention.

Waunakee (4-0) retained the No. 3 ranking among large schools (901 enrollment and larger), and remains the highest-ranked school that is expected to compete in Division 2 of the WIAA playoffs.

Sun Prairie (4-0), the sole leader in the Big Eight Conference, was ranked fourth and 2016 Division 2 state runner-up Monona Grove (4-0) was ninth.

Four-time defending state champion Kimberly (4-0), which has won 60 consecutive games, was a unanimous No. 1 pick among large schools. Fond du Lac St. Mary’s Springs (4-0) was a unanimous No. 1 pick for the small schools (enrollment 300 and smaller).

Bangor (4-0) was ranked third, Black Hawk (4-0) fourth, Pecatonica/Argyle (3-1) ninth and Fall River (3-1) tied for 10th.
