Jamaica police chief urges counseling for officers
KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Jamaica’s top cop is urging members of the police force with personal problems to seek counseling.
Police Commissioner Owen Ellington made the plea after a special constable in St. Catherine parish was found dead at his home over the weekend in a suspected suicide.
In a Sunday statement, he says supervisors should be vigilant and refer any police official who is showing signs of struggling with extreme depression or distress to a counselor.
Ellington made a similar statement two years ago after a retired police officer shot and killed a family of three before turning the gun on himself in central Jamaica.
