BURRILLVILLE, R.I. (AP) — The Burrillville School Committee says reports that student fans at a recent girls’ volleyball match directed racist comments at the other team are “unfounded and outrageous,” but won’t appeal a decision to place the high school athletics program on probation for a year.

The Providence Journal reports the Town Council on Thursday suggested appealing the sanction imposed by the Rhode Island Interscholastic League, the state’s governing body of high school sports.

The school committee said the administration investigated the allegations of racial slurs and while it found evidence of unsportsmanlike conduct, it found no evidence of racial slurs.

The school committee said there was no basis for an appeal.

The coach of Central Falls and a parent reported hearing racial taunts and intimidating comments at a match on Sept. 24.
