Church hosts community ice cream social
St. John’s Lutheran Church in Somonauk hosted a free community ice cream social Aug. 17 in the church’s parking lot. More than 100 people attended from around the area, many happily meeting old friends they hadn’t expected to see. Desserts of all kinds were in abundance, as well as door prizes donated by Somonauk Pancake House, Rambo’s Bar and Grill, Somonauk’s Country Kitchen, Kay’s Bakery, Village Ace Hardware, Bull Moose, Sandwich Floral, Village Courtyard, Art’s Foodmarket and Doug’s Hair Studio, as well as personal donations for the children from St. John’s members. Face painting was enjoyed by the young folks and a few of the young-at-heart. One of the participants who came later in the evening said, “I was so surprised to see so many people and yet, even though I came late, there was still a lot of food. This was so much fun; I hope you have this often!” St. John’s believes in gathering the community together at free events to build relationships.
