UC Irvine 80, UCLA 74

LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Johnny Rogers scored 29 points, including critical back-to-back baskets in the final two minutes Thursday night as Cal-Irvine held off UCLA 80-74 in an opening-round National Invitation Tournament basketball game.

UCLA had erased a 14-point deficit with a 17-3 run to tie the game at 68- all with 2:39 to play. Rogers then sank a 16-footer and then scored on a rebound basket and the Anteaters went on to score seven straight points.

Irvine, trailing 24-21 with 5:12 left in the first half, outscored UCLA 16-3 to take a 37-27 lead on a baseline jumper by Rogers with 1:22 remaining before intermission.


Center Tod Murphy added 20 points and 17 rebounds for Cal-Irvine, who improved its record to 17-12.

Montel Hatcher scored 24 points to lead the Bruins, who wound up the season at 15-14, their worst record since finishing the 1959-60 season at 14-12.

UCLA’s high-scoring Reggie Miller, in foul trouble in the second half, scored 16 points, tying his second-lowest output of the season. Miller picked up his fourth foul with 14:19 left.
