Carolina Elementary’s Claire Smith wins 2018 holiday card art contest

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Christmas came a little early for Claire Smith, a first grader at Carolina Elementary School, when the Darlington County School District announced Smith as the winner of the 2018 Holiday Card Art Contest.

Smith painted a decidedly cheerful reindeer boasting purple eyes against a starlit blue backdrop. Employees in the administrative offices voted Smith’s painting the winner from among nine finalists, all submitted by art teachers.

Smith will receive a certificate, $50 and a packet of holiday cards featuring her painting. She will also be invited to visit the Darlington County Institute of Technology to watch the holiday cards being printed. The Darlington County Board of Education will recognize Smith at a future meeting. Smith’s art teacher, Rita Szigeti, will receive $100 for art supplies for Carolina Elementary School.

Next year, students in grades 3-5 will able to participate in the holiday card art contest.
