Florida teen gets 15 years in prison for killing his grandma
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — A Florida teenager has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for fatally shooting and stabbing his grandmother in 2017 while she was overseeing him while his father was on vacation.
Logan Tyler Mott, 17, pleaded guilty in September to a second-degree murder charge in the death of Kristina June French, 53.
Prosecutors sought a 40-year sentence for Mott, but Circuit Judge Bruce Anderson said that wasn’t appropriate for a teenager.
The Florida Times-Union reported that Mott had been going thorough therapy related to family trauma.
Prosecutors said Mott’s father reported the pair missing when he returned from a trip . Several guns had been taken from the home.
Mott drove to New York and was caught by U.S. Border Patrol agents on a bridge leading into Canada. Police found two guns and a bloody knife in the car. French’s body was in a shallow grave behind the family’s .
During a hearing in November, Mott called his grandmother an “angel.”
“The fact that she is gone still leave me confused and baffled at times,” Mott said in a statement in court. “It feels like a bad dream, but every morning when I wake up, I relive what I did and the consequences of it.”
