LISBON, Portugal (AP) _ As both teams wore black armbands in honor of the dead from the previous day’s disaster in France, Werder Bremen of Germany beat AS Monaco 2-0 Wednesday night to win the European Cup Winners Cup.

Klaus Allofs scored with four minutes remaining in the first half, and Wynton Rufer scored 10 minutes into the second half for Werder Bremen, which won its first major European trophy.

AS Monaco, which finished second in the French League, had hoped to win the first European club trophy for France, which is winless in six cup finals.

The match was overshadowed by Tuesday night’s disaster on the French island of Corsica, where 10 fans were killed when a temporary bleacher collapsed before the scheduled start of a French Cup semifinal between Olympique Marseille and Bastia.

″Perhaps we would have played better if it were not for the events in Bastia,″ AS Monaco coach Aresene Wanger said. ″It was surely not the best preparation for a game like that.″

There were just 16,000 spectators for the game in the 120,000 seat Stadium of Light, home of Benfica of Lisbon. Both teams observed one minute of silence before kickoff.

″Monaco played a very attractive game, but in the end we deserved the victory,″ Werder Bremen coach Otto Rehhagel said. ″We waited, absorbed the pressure and took the chances presented us.″
