NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (AP) _ Singer Ella Fitzgerald was listed in fair condition Sunday after being admitted to a hospital suffering from congestive heart failure, a hospital official said.

Miss Fitzgerald, 68, was taken to Niagara Falls Medical Center after becoming ill Sunday morning in her hotel room, said hospital spokeswoman Annie Chapman.

A hospital official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Miss Fitzgerald was diagnosed as having congestive heart failure and was expected to spend several days in the hospital.

Congestive heart failure occurs when the heart had been weakend and can no longer pump blood properly. It does not mean the heart has stopped, but that its efficiency has been lowered.

Ms. Chapman said the hospital would not comment officially on Miss Fitzgerald’s condition on the order of doctors. Earlier, she said the problem was apparently heat exhaustion.

″She is in intensive care and she’s doing pretty good,″ Ms. Chapman said.

Miss Fitzgerald’s manager, Pete Cavello, said the singer had suffered a respiratory problem.

″Her breathing is not what it should be,″ he said.

Miss Fitzgerald, who had performed Saturday night in nearby Lewiston, is known for her improvisational ″scat″ singing. She was treated for a fluid buildup in her lungs last August in a Washington, D.C., hospital.
