I-80 crash during snow squall sends dozens to hospitals
NEW COLUMBIA, Pa. (AP) — Authorities say a crash involving more than a dozen vehicles on a central Pennsylvania interstate during a snow squall sent dozens of people to hospitals, and a coroner was called to the scene.
State transportation officials said the crash was reported at about 1 p.m. Wednesday on Interstate 80 in White Deer Township.
The Mifflinburg Hose Company says 15 to 20 cars and trucks were involved and a rescue crew was called to extract one person flown to a hospital.
Evangelical Community Hospital in Lewisburg reported receiving 37 patients, some of whom were still being evaluated. At least three were transferred to other facilities. Another 21 people who weren’t patients were being housed at the hospital and a family center was set up at a hotel.
Geisinger Medical Center said it had received nine patients, including three from other facilities, but no conditions were immediately available.
The interstate was shut down in both directions for 34 miles, but eastbound lanes were later reopened.
