Stamford special taxing district approved by Senate
HARTFORD — A special taxing district for the Stamford Transportation Center was approved by the Senate Monday night to redevelop and improve the city’s main transit hub.
“This creates tax incremental financing district for city,” said state Sen. Carlo Leone, D-Stamford.
“It has worked well in the South End,” Leone told senators. “This district would surround our transit parking garage. We have been trying to improve the district and this would allow current developers and homeowners to create a district and come up with a plan with the state.”
The bill passed by a 30-6 vote and now heads to the House for consideration, where it is expected to also pass.
The bill establishes the Transportation Center Improvement District with bonding authority and the ability to assess special taxes for redevelopment efforts and infrastructure. A governing body would be formed and the city would have to agree to the overall redevelopment plan.
