Three running for Rockwood school board seat

May 11, 2019 GMT

Three candidates are running for a seat in region one of the Rockwood Area School District.

The region includes Casselman and Seven Springs boroughs and Middlecreek and Upper Turkeyfoot townships.

Republican Bradley Pletcher, of Middlecreek Township, said he is running because he has two children in the elementary and high schools in the district.

Pletcher, a laborer for Leasock Excavating in Somerset, said that he doesn’t yet have any specific goals if elected.

“I think everything’s going pretty good,” he said of the district.

“Most people in the area pretty well know me.”

Pletcher serves as a flag football coach in the district and as an assistant truck foreman at the New Centerville & Rural Volunteer Fire Co.

Republican Laurel Peirsel, of Upper Turkeyfoot Township, said that she hopes to bring her 30 years of experience working as a health coordinator for Somerset County Head Start to the board.

“I spent 30 years serving all the kids in Somerset County because I worked at Head Start,” Peirsel said. “I was instrumental in helping them not only be healthy, but to be educated.”

At Head Start, Perisel was responsible for 3-, 4- and 5-year-olds. She has three grandchildren enrolled in the district.

She has a bachelor’s degree in human resources from Geneva College.

“This is my first attempt at it. When you retire, you really look at things to do and serve,” she said. “I just really feel that everybody has to do something to help improve the area.” Current school board member Francis Brancato did not return phone messages left Wednesday and Friday. Brancato’s term expires this year.
