Raiders Revenge: Stevens defeats Govs to advance to State
Last season, the Pierre T.F. Riggs Governors basketball team defeated the Rapid City Stevens Raiders 76-75 in double overtime in the first day of the State Tournament in Rapid City.
Fast forward to Saturday night, and the Raiders enacted some revenge, ending the Govs season with a 60-45 victory in a Round of 16 game at Carold Heier Gymnasium in Rapid City.
The Raiders jumped out to a 17-14 first quarter lead. They’d keep that momentum up, taking a 28-24 lead into halftime. The Governors wouldn’t go down without a fight, but the Raiders put a cushion between the two teams, leading 43-35 at the end of the third quarter. The Raiders put the final dagger through the Govs season in the fourth quarter, outscoring them 17-10 en route to the victory.
The Raiders were led senior guard Cooper Bowman, who had a game high 25 points. Senior guard Connor King chipped in 17 points. The Govs were led by senior forward Peyton Zabel, who ended his Govs career with a 15 point effort.
The Govs end their season with a 6-15 record. The Raiders improved to 17-3 with the win. By virtue of their victory in the Round of 16, the Raiders will advance to next week’s Class AA Boys Basketball Tournament in Sioux Falls, where they will be the no. 1 seed. They will face no. 8 seed Sioux Falls O’Gorman (13-8), who defeated Sturgis 61-57 in double overtime to get to the State Tournament. The two teams have split their two previous regular season matchups. Next week’s State Tournament can be seen on South Dakota Public Broadcasting.
