James Cameron rips ‘hyper-gonadal’ superheroes ahead of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ release

May 9, 2018 GMT

Director James Cameron says he is exhausted with the success of superhero films starring “hyper-gonadal males without families.”

Tracking numbers for the upcoming release of “Avengers: Infinity War” will not be music to Mr. Cameron’s ears: Industry insiders say its opening weekend may gross between $190 million and $235 million.

The “Avatar” director recently lamented the culture’s continued fascination with male-dominated heroes as he promoted his new docuseries “AMC Visionaries: James Cameron’s Story of Science Fiction.”

“I’m hoping we’ll start getting Avenger fatigue here pretty soon,” Mr. Cameron told Indiewire on Saturday. “Not that I don’t love the movies. It’s just, come on, guys, there are other stories to tell besides hyper-gonadal males without families doing death-defying things for two hours and wrecking cities in the process. It’s like, oy!”

Disney and Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther” has grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide since its Feb. 16 release.

Vanity Fair recently reported that “Avengers: Infinity War” by directors Joe and Anthony Russo is “eying the highest premiere of all time.”

Mr. Cameron’s “Avatar,” released in 2009, currently reigns as the top grossing movie with $2.7 billion in ticket sales. The film sits at No. 2 domestically with $761 million in sales behind $937 million for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
