Packers: Aaron Rodgers put on IR, out at least 8 weeks; Anthony Barr says he wasn’t trying to injure the QB

The Green Bay Packers placed quarterback Aaron Rodgers on injured reserve one day after surgery on his broken right collarbone, meaning he must miss at least the next eight weeks.

There’s no guarantee that he’ll return this season, but NFL rules allow for teams to bring back two IR players later in the year after they’ve spent eight weeks on the IR list.

So far this season, the Packers have yet to use either of their return designations. Rodgers is the eighth player to be placed on IR.

McCarthy said Rodgers’ surgery Thursday was a success. He said he spoke at length with team physician Dr. Patrick McKenzie, who has been in contact with the quarterback.

Vikings linebacker Anthony Barr was not fined for his hit on Rodgers, as the league didn’t deem it dirty or illegal. But Barr was fined $9,115 for his unnecessary roughness penalty when he headbutted Packers wide receiver Davante Adams along the sideline.

“By no means was I trying to injure or take out Aaron Rodgers,” Barr told Twin Cities reporters Friday. “He’s one of, if not the best, player in this league. I’m not a dirty player. We don’t preach that around here.

“I think I hit (Tampa Bay quarterback) Jameis (Winston) similar earlier in the season, and nobody mentioned it. It’s a dirty play in some people’s eyes because of the injury. I think if (Rodgers) gets up, we’re not having this conversation. Again, I wish him a speedy recovery.”

As for the head butt, Barr said, “That was just being stupid. That’s not me being dirty. That’s just me being stupid.”

Minnesota wide receiver Laquon Treadwell was fined $24,309 for his illegal blindside block on cornerback Lenzy Pipkins, which caused a concussion.

In addition to the good news/bad news the Packers got on their offensive line, their defensive backfield is uncertain, too. Although cornerbacks Kevin King and Pipkins are both out of the concussion protocol and were removed from the injury report, cornerbacks Davon House (quadricep) and Damarious Randall (hamstring) are questionable.

Three players were ruled out: Hybrid safety/linebacker Morgan Burnett (hamstring), outside linebacker Ahmad Brooks (back) and inside linebacker Joe Thomas (ankle).
