Wallace E. Linn, 93, passed away Friday (Nov. 9, 2018).
He was born and raised in Essex, Iowa. Wally was an exceptional athlete who received a scholarship at Iowa State University, left school to join the U.S. Navy and served as an officer in the South Pacific during World War II. After the war, he attended Drake University, where he played football and met his future wife, Carolyn.
Wally pursued a career in teaching and coaching on the high school level, first in Iowa and then in Illinois. He finished his 40-year career as the athletic director at Oak Forest High School. Wally and Carolyn split their retirement years between Oak Forest and Arizona, enabling them to play golf year-round.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years; and son, Michael.
Surviving are his three sons, Thomas (Debra), William (Linda) and James. He was the proud grandfather of Joseph, Brett, Michael, Jessica, Mattie and Jetaun; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial gathering will be from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home, 295 Main St. NW, Bourbonnais.
