New Jason Katims drama, ‘Rise,’ among top viewing choices (videos)

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The top viewing choices for the week include the premiere of NBC’s “Rise,” a drama from Jason Katims, the writer-producer behind such acclaimed series as “Friday Night Lights” and “Parenthood”:

“Deception” (10 p.m. Sunday, March 11, WEWS Channel 5): Prolific producer Greg Berlanti (“Arrow,” “The Flash,” “Riverdale,” “Supergirl,” “Black Lightning”) adds another titel to his busy schedule. This crime drama stars Jake Cutmore-Scott as Cameron Black, disgraced magician whose career has been ruined by scandal. Looking to put his skills to use in a new career, he becomes a consultant for the FBI. Using every trick in his book and inventing new ones, he employs his considerable art of deception, influence and illusion to snare the world’s most elusive criminals.

“Jane” (8 p.m. Monday, March 12, National Geographic and Nat Geo Wild): Director Brett Morgan’s acclaimed film, with an original score by Philip Glass, tells the story of conservationist and scientist Jane Goodall. The documentary uses footage shot by Goodall’s future husband, Hugo van Lawick, of her first experiences in Gombe, Tanzinia, in the 1960s. Thought to be lost, this recently discovered footage is intercut with present-day interviews of Goodall to provide an in-depth portrait of her life.

“Rise” (10 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, WKYC Channel 3): Katims’ new NBC drama stars Josh Radnor as Lou Mazzuchelli, a dedicated teacher and family man who sheds his self-doubt and takes over a school’s lackluster theater department. His efforts end up galvanizing not only the faculty and students but the entire working-class town. Katims’ cast also includes Rosie Perez, Auli’i Cravalho, Damon J. Gillespie, Marley Shelton, Rarmian Newton, Ted Sutherland, Amy Forsyth.
