7 More Officers Indicted in Chile

October 30, 1999

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) _ A court charged seven retired military officers Friday in the kidnapping and killing of seven leftists during Gen. Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship.

Among those named in the arrest warrants was retired Gen. Hugo Salas, who headed the National Information’s Center, the feared secret police of the Pinochet regime.

Salas was the fourth general and third former head of the security service to be charged for human rights violations during Pinochet’s 1973-90 reign.

Judge Milton Juica also indicted two lieutenant colonels and four lower rank officers.

All the suspects were charged with kidnapping and killing seven members of the Manuel Rodriguez Patriotic Front, a pro-Communist urban guerrilla.

So far 17 former security agents have been charged in this case, known as ``Operation Albania″ after the code-name used by the secret agency at the time.

Pinochet is under police custody in Britain and fighting extradition to Spain, where a judge has charged him with committing torture during his regime. The Extradition hearings open on Monday.
