Neals’ 19 points leads MALC over Devs
BULLHEAD CITY — The host Patriots knocked off the River Valley High School Dust Devils 54-43 at Mohave Accelerated Learning Center on Monday night.
Junior center Zach Neal scored 19 points to lead the No. 7-ranked Arizona Interscholastic Association 1A West Region MALC squad over the AIA 3A West Region Dust Devils during the nonconference boys basketball game.
Neal also grabbed 14 rebounds while adding two assists.
It was clear from the opening tip-off that the Dust Devils’ plan was to stop MALC 6-foot-5 junior center Jacob Leslie by double teaming him, said Patriots head coach Joey Leslie by text message, “It wasn’t going to work,” he added.
While the MALC center scored eight points, grabbed five rebounds, blocked four shots and handed out four assists, Patriots shooting guard Devin Homer set a school record by burying six 3- pointers en route to 18 points.
While the Dust Devils doubled Jacob Leslie, Neal produced most of his points by cutting and driving to the basket, Coach Leslie said. “It is fun to watch the guys be unselfish, hit the open guy and play team basketball,” he added.
Trevor Walker scored 10 points and Brenan Gladeau chipped in seven for River Valley, said Dust Devils head coach Dan Powell by text message.
Coach Leslie said Jacob Leslie altered the trajectory of numerous Dust Devils’ shots.
The Patriots’ record is 13-4 overall, 12-1 in conference and 5-0 in region, according to the aiaonline.org power-point ranking system. The 28-ranked Dust Devils’ record is 5-11 overall, 2-6 in conference and 2-6 in region.
